Clementine is a fairy tale worked into "Real Life," with a deft hand. Two ages and mindsets collide; against the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in France (which happens to coincide with a more famous Revolution!), the author poses the twilight of enchantment. What begins as a tale of French provincial life quickly becomes a parable of change and loss, in the guise of "Sleeping Beauty" (the traditional version, not the Disneyfied one). The suggestion of enchantment haunting the edges of life is irresistible--by the time I got to Part III I was reading faster and faster, as points of contract between the fantasy world and the modern age were being established. As Clementine says at the end, "Our fates and yours [the fairies] are linked together even if we do not always understand it." One need not believe in fairies to know that there's more to this life than what we comprehend through the senses. We ignore it at our peril!
