Product Description

Review

I liked the overall impression of the publication and as a tutor of psychology myself I could appreciate that there was comprehensive coverage in a down-to-earth way. I particularly like the sections on the psychoanalytic approach and the biological approach. Getting these topic areas right in balance can be tricky but Mr Keegan has done a good job here, ! I warmed to the author within the first few pages of the introduction where I was impressed with his honesty. His preface explains his love of psychology and a bit about his background which creates confidence that the man 'knows his stuff'. -- Glo Potter, Principal Community Learning Worker, K This book is eminently readable. It can be used as the central text of a course or easily dipped into for reference. Presentation, content and readability are all first class. Modern textbooks have to compete with the television and videos. This gives them a run for their money. -- Times Educational Supplement, Scotland 20030221

Product Description

The first comprehensive text tailored to the curriculum of the Scottish Qualifications Authority, "Higher Psychology: Approaches and Methods" is the ideal textbook for the Higher Psychology course. The content of this book is specifically driven by the curriculum content, learning outcomes, performance criteria and the internal/external assessments for Higher Psychology as contained within the SQA specification. 3.0 out of 5 stars Coming from experience, 19 Dec 2002
I am a sixth year student studying Higher Psychology. At first I felt this book was an excellent study aid for external, and internal, examinations. However, I found it to be very 'wordy' and including a bit too much info, ie. I was bogged down! The information was absolutley correct, but I felt other options (such as class notes) where more useful. This was due to the fact I had no time to read the in-depth analysis of each approach... as I have more subjects to worry about. Furthermore, it only covers the first unit out of three. If you are intersested in Psychology for future study... it's a PERFECT book, but if you are like me and just want a decent grade, this is not the book for you!

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE - The SQA Higher Psychology course has changed, 12 Sep 2006
By supermel27 (Scotland) - See all my reviews
The SQA Higher syllabus has been changed since this book was published. Check the SQA website for details. Although obviously the information in this book is still valid, the format no longer matches the higher course, which is now arranged into domains rather than approaches. Staddon et al., "Psychology for Higher" is tailored to the new course

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent textbook!, 18 Oct 2003
I have read a great number of psychology books and find that this is one of the best. It was written specifically for Scottish, Higher Psychology and everything in the book is relevant to this course. It is a refreshing change being able to read a book and know that everything in it is pertinent. This book would also be ideal for any subject which contains some psychology. I gave it to a friend when she started Higher Social Care, to help her with her Mental Health and Psychology classes. She uses it all the time and finds the down to earth style of the book helps her to learn the material. In particular the analogies and stories the author uses help to illustrate a particular point. Some of these are especially humorous. The author must know a thing or two because the humour helps to make the content more memorable and hence easier to learn!

The book contains a lot of information and I found this to be a great aid in learning. Rather than struggle through a subject using only some meagre notes and trying to learn only that which is absolutely necessary, I discovered early on that the best way to learn a subject is to build up as much extra knowledge as possible. This in turn provides the basis for better learning, since anything new can be understood and related to more easily using this wider view of the subject.

Overall I think this book belongs in any psychology student’s collection and will almost certainly bring about a better understanding of the subject.
