Product Description

Product Description
Teach Yourself Portuguese Grammar is an up-to-date introduction to Portuguese Grammar. It contains both traditional explanations of the most important points of grammar and lively texts and exercises to check comprehension. All linguistic terms are explained in a glossary at the start of the book and all structures are illustrated with examples that are translated into English. You can work through the units from start to finish or dip in and out to practise the areas you need the most.

There are 46 short units each consisting of
- a 'Grammar in focus' section, where the language point of the unit is explained with examples;
- exercises to practice what you have learnt;
- a 'Grammar in context' section, where you will find the grammar points illustrated in realistic texts such as dialogues and extracts from authentic material.

'Language watch' sections throughout the book highlight links between Portuguese and English and are full of handy hints to aid your learning.
The book takes European Portuguese as its standard but major differences in structure or vocabulary in Brazilian Portuguese are highlighted and there is a special section at the end of the book listing some of the most important differences in vocabulary.

This book will help you to understand and manipulate Portuguese Grammar with confidence because:
- you need no prior knowledge of grammatical terminology to use it;
- the approach is accessible and supportive;
- the examples are clear and in context;
- exercises help you practise every point;
- 'Language watch' sections guide you towards a better understanding of how the language works.

2.0 out of 5 stars A grammar that does not know grammar, 15 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Although this book is advertised as an accessible guide to Portuguese grammar, it contains pompous words like 'modicum'. It tells you of 'some modicum of regularity'. Wouldn't a small measure of regularity be much more accessible?

Grammar terms are often used incorrectly. If you don't know the difference between a phrase, a clause and a sentence, this book will not leave you any wiser. You are told that 'the phrase 'Aluga-se terreno' translates literally as 'Land sells itself' (this is not a 'phrase', it is a 'sentence'!). You are told that 'clauses containing the word 'if' are known as conditional sentences' (they are not 'sentences' but 'clauses'!).

Faulty concepts run across different grammatical categories. You are told that 'a' meaning 'at,on', 'de' meaning 'from, of' etc are 'prepositions of time' (this must be a mix-up with adverbs of time!).

Some definitions and examples are rather bizarre. You are told that the imperfect tense is 'for incomplete, unfinished actions and states in the past, often happening at the time a finished action took place and interrupted them'. Then you are given this example: 'Chovia muito e o vento estava forte quando chegaram', It was raining heavily and the wind was strong when they arrived. Does this mean that these people who arrived also interrupted the heavy rain and strong wind? (they must have remarkable powers!).

This is all a bit strange bearing in mind the glossary of grammatical terms at the beginning of the book. These definitions are not too bad. It makes you wonder whether the book comes from one source and the glossary from somewhere else. Pity the book did not learn from the glossary!

2.0 out of 5 stars It will leave the learner rather confused, 5 April 2003
By A Customer
I am Brazilian. In my opinion several things are not quite right in this grammar but as a native speaker I may be too critical. However there is one point I want to make. In the introductory section this grammar makes some strong statements about the differences between European and Brazilian Portuguese, but throughout the units there are several mistakes about these differences. Just a few examples. On page 168 you read that the conditional may be and often is substituted by the imperfect tense, especially in the spoken language (though not in Brazil). This is wrong. We use the imperfect for the conditional a lot in Brazil. On page 204 you read that the command form used exclusively in most of Brazil is in the third person and the verb goes into what is known as the present subjunctive. This is wrong. Colloquially we often say "fala", "vai", etc. (speak, go, etc) which is the imperative for "tu" although we do not really say "tu"(it also looks like the third person singular of the present indicative). On page 242 you read that the subjunctive is used after words like "talvez" and "oxala"(there should be an accent on the last "a") but this is supposed to be in Portugal not in Brazil. Well, we say it too. I find that anyone using this grammar will end up rather confused and I regret to say that shall not be able to recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot of it but how useful?, 29 Jan 2003
This book is packed with material on Portuguese grammar. There is a lot of information, but I wonder how much of it is really of practical use. The verbs are particularly daunting. You have to learn eight different forms for each tense, including an old second person that is now practically obsolete. It is used in church services. It is like having to learn 'thou art' when all you want to know is how to say 'you are'.

The book also has mistakes. For example we are told that 'erguer', to rise, is a radical-changimg verb. This is not true. In this verb there is just a spelling change from 'gu' to 'g' to show that its pronunciation is preserved whatever the ending. There is not a root change as in 'mentir', to lie, 'eu minto', I lie, and 'dormir', to sleep, 'eu durmo', I sleep. I found the right explanation in other books.

This is not what I expected. When you buy a grammar you want to be able to trust that it contains correct and useful information.
