Product Description

Teach Yourself Indonesian is the course for anyone who wants to progress quickly from the basics to understanding, speaking and writing Indonesian with confidence. Although aimed at those with no previous knowledge, it is equally suitable for anyone wishing to brush up existing knowledge for a holiday or business trip. Key structures and vocabulary are introduced in 24 thematic units, progressing from basic greetings and introductions and dealing with everyday situations to writing a formal letter and business communications. The emphasis is on communication throughout, with important language structures introduced through dialogues on the accompanying recording. There are plenty of exercises to practise the language as it is introduced and tips throughout to help with pronunciation and grammar. Cultural information boxes give useful advice and information for anyone planning a trip to Indonesia.

This new edition is a complete rewrite and contains transcripts to the dialogues, a grammar summary and a full, two-way vocabulary.

The page design has been improved and section headings are given in English to make the course easier to follow.

The accompanying CDs give approximately 150 minutes of pronunciation guidance and listening material. They are available separately (0 340 84754 9) or in a pack with the book (0 340 84753 0).


About the Author

Christopher Byrnes is foreign languages graduate who went on to do a teaching qualification. He began his teaching career as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language and continued to study other languages while teaching all over the world. Eva Nyimas is a native of Sumatera, Java, and can speak several native Indonesian languages as well as standard Indonesian, Malay and English. She has taught English and Indonesian to children and to adults and is dedicated to the spread of Indonesian language and culture throughout the world.

I really like the lay out of this book. I felt I learnt quite a lot of Indonesian and I enjoyed reading all the cultural information that the authors included. The dialogues were very helpful and actually relevant, which makes a nice surprise. I think it helps that Indonesian isn't a particularly difficult language, but even so I found this book very useful indeed. The content is suitable for anyone (novices to linguists) because it covers the right amount of vocabulary. So if you're going to Indonesia then you must by this book- don't just expect everyone to speak English!

The books wrote by Christoper Byrnes and Eva Nyimas is very good book. The book also described the culture and equipped by pictures. Every chapter also equipped by picture of topic being explained how Indonesian poeple behave. This book is very helpfull for the foreigners who will learn more about Indonesian language. It is not like other book, Christ and Eva tried to explain the culture as well.

This is a very simple and practical introduction to Indonesian language. The book teaches you useful and relevant phrases for day to day conversation, as well as cultural information, and the CD alows you to take the part of the speakers in conversations. My only small criticism is that the pauses in the dialogues are sometimes too short for you to say your bit, which is annoying when I am practising in the car and cannot pause the CD! Overall a good purchase, recommended.
