This is to my mind the best book that Aline Templeton has written to date. Her characterisation, especially of the female characters, is brilliant and the focus is on "who did it", rather than on the black details of death. "The Darkness and the Deep" shows she has mastered the genre and I cannot recommend it too highly.

I don't like to rubbish writers' work but this really is one of the lamest books I've read in a long time. The author is clearly trying to introduce some psychological depth to her characters which is to be applauded but she's so bad at it - all her characters are shallow cliches: the pushy big-city cop, the social worker hungry for a child to admit to being abused (ok, I'm an ex-social worker so I found this particularly irritating), the malicious gossip, the delinquent teenager....all stock characters none given any sort of new angle. Then there's the writing style which clonks along in the flattest and most pedestrian way, obstinately refusing to create any sort of tension. And there's the annoying straining for a particular kind of Scottishness and well I can't really say anything about the plot because I wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone who is getting more enjoyment out of it than I did but I was totally unconvinced. Actually the most annoying thing of all is that I read it right to the end because I kept thinking surely it's going to get better. And it doesn't. So what a waste of time.
