Review

"* 'What is exceptionally striking about Meade's scary storytelling is that the narrative and characterisation are beautifully written and crafted.' - Glasgow Herald on RESURRECTION DAY * 'A tremendous sense of dramatic action and page-turning excitement culminating in a riveting, thought-provoking climax' - The Sunday Times on SNOW WOLF * 'WEB OF DECEIT, the fifth novel from Dublin writer Glenn Meade, is truly worthy of the page-turner tag. A twisting and turning plotline will keep readers guessing to the very end and the simple and direct language makes it an easy and enjoyable read. There's absolutely nothing to fault with this book. Brilliant.' - RTE, Ireland * 'Sheer, nail-biting suspense... a rare treat.' - Sunday Telegraph on BRANDENBURG"

5.0 out of 5 stars great read!, 11 Nov 2006
This review is from: The Devil's Disciple (Paperback)
Really enjoyed this one, and didn't know that I would. It seemed a little different to Meade's previous books, but I was very pleasantly surprised.
It shows that he's got a good range and can write this type of thriller as well as the historical/terrorist/CIA type he's written. This one kept me going til the end and the double twist was a great surprise. Liked the writing vey much too--and the short chaptrers gave it a great pace. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars terrifying tale that races along!, 14 Sep 2006
This review is from: The Devil's Disciple (Paperback)
I have read all of Meade's novels and this is up there with the very best. A slight departure from his usual type of story, and the central character is a woman, but it shows he's versatile and he can certainly keep the pace rip-roring along, and the scary, unexpected twists and turns are truly terrifying and unexpected. Wow! A great read! I'd definitely recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Murder and Mayhem Bookclub review, 16 Dec 2006
By A. J Thompson "voyagersaus" (Western Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Devil's Disciple (Paperback)
This night Kate Moran attends the execution of Constantine Gamal. She stands with others who also have good reason to witness his death: all who have traveled to the prison as she has and run the media gauntlet outside have lost their loved ones to this serial killer. Her fiancé and his young daughter have been dead for some time but the pain of their loss has not decreased with the passing of days. Kate's second reason for attending is that she was the agent who made her career with hunting down Gamal. He pays tonight for a series of murders, some of which he has admitted to and some that he hasn't. Kate can understand that Gamal would choose to spend some of his last words, and actions, in unsettling her. As the weeks go on past his execution and the father/daughter murders begin again, she is once again involved in his evil.

With copycat murders occurring Kate, who was an original suspect in the mind of a hostile co-worker, is once again under the F.B.I. spotlight. Someone out there is manipulating both the investigation and her, skillfully soon turning the hunter into the hunted.

It is a point to make that THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE has that half way feel, in that there is a lot of preceding action to this story which is only scantily referred to. The major plotline is not original but Meade craftily manipulates reader perception throughout the read to affirm, then place doubt, then re-affirm reader's speculation as to the killers identity throughout. What never really gels is the character of Agent Kate Moran. She seems remarkably disassembled for an FBI agent who is lead on a serial killer case, making a whole pile of silly unprofessional decisions that unravel her life and do much to threaten an important investigation. It is not a well drawn female character, or really a well drawn character at all. This does particularly disappoint as the chase scenes of THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE are of the heart-thumping variety and much more could have been done to draw in the reader who needs an emotional stake in the person under threat. Readers of Glenn Meade have pointed out that this novel is a departure in style for Meade who is known for his best selling historical/political suspense thrillers.

Here is a very un-original comment as well; this novel would have been served better with a lot less to it; trimming would have eliminated a lot of flat spots where not much is happening other than the musings and ponderings of the main character. Inevitably with the first-person narrative you are going to get a lot of character insight but a whole chunk of it doesn't seem terribly plausible or interesting. The romantic entanglement is simply baffling as to its inclusion but doesn't hinder the read too much.

What we have with THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE is a solid action read that cried out for a firmer hand on characterization. The reader needs to get past this to be entertained and probably for the main will manage to do so.

THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE is Irish author Glenn Meade's sixth novel.
