Product Description

The Guardian
'Suffused with desire and regret, this beautiful, understated novel is a moving meditation on change and compromise.'

Review
'An intimate drama that wears its learning lightly, written with great clarity and the minimum of narrative fuss . . . Suffused with desire and regret, this beautiful, understated novel is a moving meditiation on change and compromise' (Guardian )

'Norminton's prose is as lyrical as ever, at its best in his wonderfully bucolic realisation of the Diggers' doomed utopian community . . . Anything by Gregory Norminton is a pleasure to read - the pages skip by in his light, cadenced style' (Time Out )

'An elegant, convincing historical novel whose setting complements rather than engulfs the human drama' (Times Literary Supplement )

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Cameo, 25 Jul 2005
By A Reader (North West England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ghost Portrait (Hardcover)
GHOST PORTRAIT is a tersely beautiful book. By careful choice of moments it conveys the story of the life of a man. The painter Nathaniel Deller, who is at the end of his life, finds himself haunted by his past. He has lived through the English Civil war and the Restoration and these fragments of time are depicted in well-chosen snapshots. It is all that is needed; these astute, accurately described scenes convey so much. We learn about aspects of his character - things that he did, things that he didn't do - and how these built up, layer upon layer, to produce an elderly man, wracked more with the pain of memory than the physical ailments which have caused him to lose his sight ('...his eyes, when they open, are frosted like windows in winter...'). The structure is clever and assembled with great skill, and the story has a strong peel of authenticity. I learnt a lot about aspects of the Civil War and the ending is satisfying, happy and yet moving - something that stayed with me long after I had finished.

5.0 out of 5 stars History on the human scale, 7 Nov 2005
By L. Webster "liwebster" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ghost Portrait (Hardcover)
A sad and beautiful book. Ghost Portrait differs from Norminton's previous novels, swapping expansive exuberance for understated intimacy.

We are given three slices from the story of an artist, Nathaniel Deller, glimpsing his idealism, his compromises and his final attempt to make good on his life. The lapidary nature of the central narrative is enhanced by its setting in the English civil war.

This is a historical novel written with clarity and sympathy, and very much on the human scale.
