Product Description

Times Literary Supplement, November 5th, 2004

'An eye-opening shocker of a novel.'

Review

‘ In THE DISPOSSESSED Margaret Murphy . . . uncovers the horrifying snake-pit that is life for asylum-seekers in modern Britain . . . an eye-opening shocker of a novel, in which the links between sharp practice and crime form a chain to bind the unwary.’ TLS

'Exemplary chiller . . . If Murphy's appointed task is to scare the reader...she succeeds brilliantly.' Literary Review on DARKNESS FALLS

'A cracking good read with a masterly doubletake.' Scotsman on DARKNESS FALLS

'DARKNESS FALLS is a model of what the modern suspense thriller should be...tense, scary, page-turning and stomach-churning – because we care most of all about what happens to the characters. Set aside a day – you won't be able to put it down once it has you in its grip. Val McDermid

'Surprisingly teasing . . . visual, well-paced thriller.' Daily Mirror on DARKNESS FALLS

'Just what British crime writing is crying out for - a compassionate, grass roots British novel with the pace, energy and impeccable research of an American thriller.' Mo Hayder on DARKNESS FALLS

'Ms Murphy handles her complex plot with a sure hand and brings it to a stunning climax.' Sunday Telegraph on WEAVING SHADOWS

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark world, 17 Nov 2004
This review is from: The Dispossessed (Hardcover)
This is Margaret Murphy's most powerful novel to date, on a very topical and highly controversial subject. The theme which recurs constantly through the book is that nothing is exactly what it seems - a timely reminder for those who may believe they know "all about" immigrants. Another recurring theme is shown by the author's skill in manipulating the reader's view of who exactly are the "bad guys". No moral absolutes here!
Add to all this an increasingly moving and vivid use of language, and you will find a book that does not disappoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and highly topical, 11 Nov 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Another new author for me and one I'm glad I came across. The use of illegal immigrants (refugees - call them what you like) in a murder story is highly topical and the author creates an environment where crime, trafficking and general fear of discovery is all too prevalent.

Lately, we've seen in the news the all-too-familiar disregard for the human being as a person, be it starvation, genocide, disenfranchisement or displacement and, of course, high-profile terrorism.

The author portrays the disregard for human life within the immigrant community (illegal or otherwise) with a grasp that suggests her own research was near to home but whatever the reason, The Dispossessed is a very good thriller.

Her characterisation of not just the immigrants but also the police involved in the search for a killer brings to life the community around which this story evolves. It is all the more shocking when a close member of one of the main characters is also killed off and it is at this point that the book really moves into top gear, rattling along until we reach a very satisfying ending - at least for those of us who believe some 'get away with murder'!

I don't know if the author's main characters will return. If they do, I'll buy the book; northern grit is always a good seller for me!

Don't miss this chance to read a really first class thriller
