Product Description
1930, New York. In the unbearable heat of summer, Irish immigrant Will Carthy works as a riveter on the tallest skyscraper in the world, spending his days above the clouds and his nights fighting loneliness. When his half-sister, Isobel, sails out to join him, Will hurries to meet her at Ellis Island, only to find that she seems to have vanished before passing through immigration control. And so begins Will's quest, scouring the teeming tenements for a red-haired girl who now haunts his dreams. Desperate for help, Will becomes involved with the charismatic but lethal union agitator, Foxy Nolan, and the Trichardts - a wealthy, socialite couple with a disturbing agenda of their own. Little by little, though, Will realises that something deeply sinister is at play in Isobel's disappearance and that the answer might rest in an altogether wider arena of social and political ambition...The Golden Door captures brilliantly the mood of Prohibition-era New York, when the glittering towers of modern Manhattan were rising from every street corner as the American Dream came crashing down.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1930's New York brought to life, 27 April 2004
I chose this book because of its connection with Ellis Island, a placewhich fascinated me a couple of years ago when we visited New York for thefirst time. The experiences of immigrants from all corners of the worldmake compelling reading and The Golden Door could be one of the truestories taken from the Ellis Island museum.
The protagonist is anIrish immigrant named Will who works as a riveter on the construction ofthe Empire State Building. In his spare time he hunts for his sister whodisappears on arrival in the Big Apple. He is a very likeable centralcharacter so well fleshed out by the author who may have a penchant forbig Irish fellas...
I'm a reader who tends to spend a couple of weekson a book, however this held my attention and truly deserves the cliche'couldn't put it down' or 'a real page turner'.
Anyway it comes with a very high recommendation from me - a great storyand characters together with a realistic rendering of New York in theGreat Depression.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something a little bit different, 17 Mar 2006
The golden door's central story is the disappearance of Isobel while entering New York at Ellis Island. Her brother Will , the main character, leaves no stone unturned as he struggles to discover the truth and find his sister.
While this mystery is the main theme throughout the book it works on a lot of other levels. Its a period snapshot of 1930's New York in the hard , cruel world of constructing skyscrapers. The golden door is also a love story . It also , particularly towards the end, has the zip and feel of a thriller , racing towards its conclusion.
There's a climatic finale and then still time for a jaw dropping shock in the closing pages. It also delivers right at the end a twist that rewards the reader who took everything in earlier in the book. A kind of literary "Blair Witch" moment.
I loved this book. It was certainly something a bit different to the crime/ thriller novels i normally read. Sometimes , even a few months after reading a novel , you struggle to remember the characters and plot. Im writing this review nearly a year after reading the book and it still stays vivid in the memory.
