Product Description

‘Edith’s house interested us from the beginning’

Mysterious and inviting, Jessie and Margaret are drawn to their reclusive neighbour’s house. It offers an escape from the dreary summer of 1977 and their fragile family life, into a world they can only dream about. When the house suddenly burns down at the same time as their mother moves out to live with her new boyfriend, and their father develops an unhealthy crush on a woman in their street, life seems bleak for the girls.

Escaping the claustrophobia of family life isn’t easy, until the story of an eccentric and beautiful female explorer from the 1930s unfolds in a series of letters. In these letters she tells stories of far-flung places, secrets, doomed love and adventure.  Her determination to live life to the full, risking everything cares about, holds untold consequences for all of them

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy from the very first page, 30 Jun 2008
Four storeys up, as close to the sky as we could imagine, sat an attic room populated by ghosts.
"Listen", Margaret used to say. "I can hear something"
"What do you hear?"
"People's lives"

What a gorgeous, warm, wonderful book that's brimming with heart. I enjoyed it so much, I can't recommend it highly enough.

Two stories are woven together - one, the ordinary life of an endearing teenager in the 1970's, trying to cope as her delightfully idiosyncratic suburban family collapses. The second is the extraordinary life of a beautiful female explorer in the 1930's.

The book is packed with nostalgic treats, laugh out loud moments and poignant, gut wrenching twists. On one level it all seems deceptively simple, yet it was only afterwards I realised just how clever the writer is - ideas from the book about love and life and family keep popping into my mind days after I've finished it.

My only regret is, I wish I'd saved it for my summer holiday!

4.0 out of 5 stars A book to cheer up any journey, 28 May 2009
This is a delightful book which I picked up in a train station and couldn't put down until the end of the journey. Louise Wener explores childhood in 1977, reminding us of the events and flavours of that time.
Two sisters have to cope with the pressures of teenage life, the split-up of their parents' marriage and fitting in at school. It all sounds a bit soap-opera but Wener manages to construct the narrative with enough warmth to allow us to see the world through the eyes of the narrator and to laugh at the antics of the adult characters.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badley written ,uneven and awful, 9 Feb 2009
Oh dear,oh dear
and she did so well with goodnight steve mcqueen.

The book is an uneven mess littered with obvious alleged twists .
The flash backs to the 1930s was quite interesting.Vividly painting a picture of another world and another class. It really made the reader care about the ladys fate.
Shame its only about 2 percent of the book.
Unfortunately the other stuff doesnt really hang together well at all.
Two young girls in 70s london dealing parental break up.Filled with trite dialogue and signed posted plot devices .I must say i didnt give a jot for the characters in question. The setting seemed like an alien world with bad haircuts and a lot of references ,people who havent lived in 70s london wouldnt get.
A cheating mom a anorexic girl and a punk none of whom i empathised with or cared about.
So youre left with a barely readable book ,unengaging characters and the disturbing feeling that the author was a one hit wonder.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear, truly awful
I've loved Wener's other books but this is truly truly awful. I didn't care about any of the characters, it's dull, has a hint of desperation about it. Really poor. Read more
