Product Description

Elizabeth George, bestselling novelists

From beginning to end, China Lake is a book that no reader of thrillers will be able to put down.

Review

'From beginning to end China Lake is a book that no reader of thrillers will be able to put down. Great characters, dynamic plot, nail-biting action – Meg Gardiner gives us everything.' (Elizabeth George 20020809)

'compelling tale, a powerful mix of murder, terrorism and a wealth of dark secrets.' (Publishing News )

'With a colourful cast of richly delineated characters, a protagonist with whom the readers will easily identify – all big-hearted, quick-tongued and hair-trigger-tempered – this novel provides a fast-paced ride through some of the more dubious nooks and crannies of the American dream and is an impressive opening salvo by a Surrey-based expatriate who hits the bookshelves running.' (Maxim Jakubowski, Guardian )

'Sure-footed, action-packed' (Bookseller )

'China Lake makes a strong impression. The story grips and Ms Gardiner is a welcome addition to the ranks of American thriller writers.' (Sunday Telegraph )

'With energetic, punchy prose and a breathless, action-thriller plot, China Lake is an assured debut. Evan Delaney is a great character, and Gardiner is a writer to watch.' (Manchester Evening News )

'A great first novel. Fast and hard-edged. Buy it, read it' (Hull Daily Mail )

'Meg Gardiner's writing crackles with energy' (Writers Forum )

'This is . . . a cracker, with memorable characters, memorable lines and a plot that races along to an explosive ending. A great summer read.' (Huddersfield Daily Examiner )

'Religious fundamentalism, anti-Aids crusaders, nutty relatives, and a Waco-style shootout: they're all here in the exciting mix that Gardiner expertly stirs up. Great stuff.' (Independent on Sunday )

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense, exciting and full of twists!, 9 Feb 2004
By A Customer
In her book China Lake, Meg Gardiner's lead character Evan Delaney takes you on a ride through the deluded minds of a religious sect. I'm always fascinated with small towns because they seem so ideal and quaint but you do wonder what secrets are kept in these tiny communities that for me are usually only a pit stop for gas on the way to the next "real" big city. That is the backdrop, it's a small, speck-on-the-map of a town in the middle of nowhere where Evan is lead in a fight for her life. I won't blow the story and the ending, but if you like Patricia Cornwell's character Kay Scarpetta, you'll love this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pacy debut with topical overtones, 21 Jun 2002
By Gervase Fen (Fareham, Hantts.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: China Lake (Hardcover)
Evan Delaney, Meg Gardiner's sassy heroine, hooked my interest right from the get-go. As she battles against the 'leaderless resistance' movement of the Remnant, and sees those closest to her threatened, attacked, and framed, Evan gains my sympathy by simply being wonderful company... I especially enjoyed the scene where Evan, who writes science fiction novels as a sideline, is drawn into arguing about continuity problems in her own book with some of the Remnant who turn up at a book signing!

The suspense and action sequences are credible, and although some of the characters have a whole burden of plot to carry (Evan's lawyer boyfriend particularly), overall "China Lake" impresses as a book that leaves you wanting more.

4.0 out of 5 stars An American's perspective, 1 April 2007
I have read three of Meg Gardiner's books now in the past three weeks, man oh man are we all just lemmings or what? A celebrity tells us something is great and we all jump off the cliff. I bought them all without even reading a word, pathetic! For the genre, ala female hero, mystery woman, this is good. The plot is feasible, the characters build with each passing book and they are generally fast reads. The only thing I would wish for is a bit of tightening from an editor on these. There are moments of mind wander because of what I would deem as "filler". With a good 50+ page trim the suspense would be more dramatic. I won't go into explaining plot, because the previous reviewers have done so. If you like the Alphabet mysteries, the culinery mysteries then this should be your cup o tea. Speaking of tea, when will the Brits get a US publisher to push Ms. Gardiner onto this side of the pond, so she can climb a few of the bestseller lists due to distribution and readily available titles in our stores? Oprah? Stephen King? Imus? What will we all read next or should I say, WHOM?
