Product Description

Daren King, Scotland on Sunday

'A fascinating story, told with tension, pace and humour'

Review

'Like all good fiction, it frictionlessly combines both the individual and the universal ... it's both an aria and a hooligan holler to the human spirit' (Time Out 20021101)

'It's a wonderful premise for a novel, and Goddard pulls it off with a flourish …DYNAMO is a smart, funny and engaging novel from a refreshingly unusual new voice in British Fiction' (Martyn Bedford, New Statesman (Book of the Week) )

'Sheer excitement ... a pacy story that matches Elmore Leonard in its mix of hyperbole and humour ... characters (that) slip into the reader's heart' (The Times )

'Very little football occurs in Dynamo, yet it remains as transfixing as a Maradona run and as surprising and wonderful as the recent Wales v Italy result. Dynamo, like football itself, is an affirmation and exaggeration of life' (Niall Griffiths, author of Sheepshagger and Grits )

'A colourful, pensive novel full of eccentricity and desperate humour ... DYNAMO's closing minutes grip like a vice' (Sunday Herald )

'A fascinating story, told with tension, pace and humour' (Daren King, Scotland on Sunday )

'Riveting, authentic, and very down-and-dirty' (Daily Mail )

'Past events are described with a lack of inhibition ... the eccentricity and danger of Soviet Russia breathe through these pages' (Telegraph )

Praise for 'Homage to a Firing Squad':

'Funny and inventive, a superbly written and immensely enjoyable read from a supremely confident authorial voice. A book to be read at one sitting.' (Whitbread judging panel )

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb narrative on the desire for freedom, 3 Aug 2008
This review is from: Dynamo (Hardcover)
Anyone who enjoys reading about the insatiable desire of people to increase their level of freedom and reduce the influence of crushing authority should read this book.

The character's backgrounds aren't ridiculous, they are mainly taken from Europe's revolutionary history (ie Makhno) and bought to life imaginatively and convincingly.

And who needs Hollywood endings anyway?!

5.0 out of 5 stars in the dark times there will be singing, 19 Sep 2009

a strange, moving and very funny story, that is probably closer to historical "truth" than 100 dry supposedly accurate reconstructions. And don't be put off by the football element, it's a backdrop and not the point of the story.

I felt high when I finished this book. It stuck two fingers up at authority and mediocrity - it's bloody rock and roll!

The story itself is more about Spartak Moscow than Dynamo Moscow. The characters have ridiculous backgrounds, and the plot itself is far too unbelievable... Read more
