5.0 out of 5 stars A funny sad happy book, 19 May 2003
By C. Arthur (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Big Blind (Paperback)
That's what this is: a funny, sad, happy book. Probably it would have been easy for her to do another book set in the area she knows, music, but instead she has branched out into something different, into poker, the sort found in family backrooms and dingy flats and the internet. Her heroine is unusual, a woman who sorts her peas into prime number groups, and has a background note of loss in her life from her father, missing, presumed playing poker. Wener is constantly readable; sometimes the chapters are short, bite-sized gulps, sometimes big pieces you bite off, but always page-turning. And she's especially good at describing the texture of real life, the gritty detail that makes up any day.. or night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, 19 Sep 2004
Finished this an hour ago & had to come on here to write a review, what an excellent book. I laughed & had a few tears roll down my cheeks too. I am a Texas Hold'em player, although when I bought the book I actually didn't realise it was about poker as I didn't read the back cover.
Her characters are superb, everyone of them a "real" person. I really can't recommend this book enough, probably one of my favourites. Whether you play poker or not (for me it was just an huge bonus) this is a moving & funny book and very very well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good Summer!, 10 Sep 2003
This review is from: The Big Blind (Paperback)
Wener comes up trump's again(pardon the pun).
Just finished The Big Blind and can safely say to anyone thinking of buying it, don't hesitate. Louise keeps your fingers turning the pages with great ease. Audrey the main character takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions through the often dark underworld of poker.
I read her first novel last year which is also very entertaining.
Roll on number3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expectations Dashed
