Product Description

Product Description
This introduction explains the history and the theory behind Pilates, now one of the most popular exercise classes in gyms throughout the UK. Highly rated by celebrities, professional dancers, sportspeople and men and women of all ages and levels of fitness, it is now also widely acknowledged by health professionals as an effective technique for repairing specific injuries, especially to the back. With the help of approximately 100 black and white line drawings, the simple-to-follow, step-by-step instructions are suitable for both newcomers to Pilates and those who already attend classes but want to know more. The book starts with a general introduction and a summary of basic anatomy. The main principles of Pilates are explained and there is practical advice on how to do the exercises at home. The exercises themselves are given on two levels, so the reader can choose the right level and then progress on to the higher level when ready. In addition, it explains how to use the method to repair injuries or build up general strength and increase fitness levels. The glossary of terms at the end of the book serves as a useful reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical & Comprehensive, 1 Mar 2004
As a physiotherapist with a strong interest in Pilates, I have been looking for a good self-help book on the subject to recommend to my clients for some time. Most, however tend to dive in at the deep end with too many advanced exercises, skip important elements, and nearly all of them feature images of models or professional dancers doing the exercises - which for most of us is just not realistic!
Happily this book falls into none of these traps. It is written in a straightforward style, illustrated beautifully (and realistically) and the division of exercises into different levels is the best and most appropriate arrangement I have come across.
There is also a lot more detail on the history of Pilates and theory behind it than in many other books - but if that's not your thing and you just want to exercise, you can skip it and rest assured that all the important info is included with each exercise.
In short - whenever a client now asks me to recommend a good book on Pilates, this is the one I tell them about.
