Review

Very appropriate textbook within a UK context - beautifully deconstructs some aspects of the medical model and its inflence in Mental Health Nursing. (Laetitia Zeeman, University of Southampton )

Product Description

‘Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing: the craft of caring’ is one of the first comprehensive psychiatric and mental health nursing texts published in the UK.

The central feature of this groundbreaking textbook is its emphasis on a new concept of nursing practice - the craft of nursing: the idea that the care of people with psychiatric and mental health problems is neither science nor art, but a creative combination of both. This guides the reader to look beyond the medical diagnosis, emphasising the need for nurses to extend the treatment offered by other disciplines.

Divided into ten main sections, the book covers a wide range of psychiatric and mental health nursing settings, from acute, Psychiatric Intensive Care Units, and forensic settings where the primary focus is on reducing distress and preventing further deterioration; to community settings - where the focus turns to the developmental aspects of genuine ‘mental health care’.

With a strong list of contributors from Western Europe, the USA, Canada, Australasia and predominantly, the UK, the chapters integrate both theory and practice, helping the reader to appreciate the theoretical rationale for specific interventions by employing case examples from the ‘care face.’

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air, 27 Sep 2004
I would recommended this book as a comprehensive and powerful look at how nurses can help people with a large variety of problems relating to their mental health. By examining these problems from the perspective of nursing as a 'craft' it gives a more holistic perspective to bring out the person behind the problem. This is certainly in contast to many other nursing textbooks that focus primarily on the biopsychosocial model.

As a mental health nurse/ nursing student, it may not be the only textbook you buy, but I would certainly advise it be one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars BARKER AT HIS BEST, 5 Dec 2005

I always hesitate to look at a new Barker book in the shops, as I am inevitably drawn to purchase. This was one of those fateful journeys.

Since then I have used the book to prepare lectures, to inspire students and to show service users some of the advances coming in mental health care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome distraction from the medical model, 21 Mar 2005
I found that this book was informative and interesting. Having just completed my nursing training I was inspired by this book and its alternative slant on the world of psychiatry. I also felt that it was clearly written and would make an a wonderful addition to any reading list!
