Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Asthma kills 6,000 people a year. Respiratory illnesses affect millions more. According to Teresa Hale, asthmatics and others with respiratory illnesses are breathing wrong. "We have been led to believe that deep breathing is good for us because it increases our oxygen intake. In fact, the reverse is true. The more we breathe, the less oxygen actually reaches the cells of our bodies," says Hale in Breathing Free: The Revolutionary 5-Day Programme to Heal Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis, and Other Respiratory Ailments. Her breathing programme, Breath Connection, teaches you to change your breathing patterns so that you won't need to wheeze, breathe heavily, or take gulps of air after exertion. Hale promises that five days on this programme will reduce your need for medications and regular practice often increases metabolism and leads to weight loss.

Breathing Free gives a self-test to assess your breathing and teaches several techniques to improve it. Hale explains how to adapt the program for mild, moderate, or severe asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, panic attacks, general health and children with asthma. She also suggests dietary guidelines.

Hale's programme is based on the work of Konstantin Buteyko of the former Soviet Union. It is easy to understand, but will take time and effort to master. But Hale says you have a choice: "Stay where you are, with your daydreams and your deteriorating health, or take control and make some effort to effect permanent change." Hale founded Britain's renowned Hale Clinic, whose clients have included Princess Diana, the Duchess of York, Tina Turner, Richard Gere and Arnold Schwarzenegger. --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book all asthma sufferers should read, 21 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Breathing Free (Paperback)
As a asthma suffer for 20 years and someone who used an inhaler four times a day I read this book with a lot of scepticism. After four days of doing the breathing excercises in this book my inhaler use had dropped by 75%, after a week I did not need my inhalers at all. It has now been four weeks since I last used an inhaler and I still occasionally get mild asthma But I have learnt to control it with these techniques. It might sound like a cliche but this book has changed my life.Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars This has helped me, 9 May 2004
I bought this book because I was concerned that I felt like I was gasping for air all the time. I simply looked for something about "breathing" on amazon and found this book.

The book itself is repetitive and leaves you wondering exactly what it is your meant to do. The contents of the book could easily be written on a few pages so they draw it out a little.
After a few reads I worked out what it actually involved, which isn't actually a great deal (I didnt make any dietry changes as it was little different from my diet now). I just did the breathing alterations / exercises. Using their method of measuring how much you are currently "over-breathing" my results were very poor. The first few days were hard, sleeping with tape over my mouth (when I was very congested) led me to wake up in a panic thinking I wasn't getting enough air. I got used to it soon enough.

The thing I noticed most quickly (within a day or 2) is that I had A LOT more energy. Before, I felt tired all of the time, and would really have to fight not to fall asleep at work sometimes, even after a full nights sleep.
Other changes I have noticed : a healthy glow in my face, generally happier, I feel fitter, I dont feel short of breath. My congestion finally cleared after about a month and I very rarely feel short of breath now. Also, I can excercise without breathing through my mouth at all which is quite empowering.

There are aspects of the book that confuse me, like the claim that CO2 in the atmosphere is decreasing when my understanding was that pollution is in fact causing CO2 in the air to increase.

The book may not be fantastic (I also noticed lots of errors in it with spelling and writing nose when they meant mouth etc.) but I can't not give it 5 stars for the information it gives that has, as the title suggests, changed my life in some important ways.

this book has changed my husband's life. the intructions are simple and easy to follow, and the programme is effective....it really does work. at first we were sceptical as it seemed too good to be true, but within days of starting the programme his bronchitis and asthma were well under control.

3.0 out of 5 stars Much cheaper than a course, spoiled by some wild claims
Good explaination of the history and the method itself. Certainly enough information to try it out for yourself at home. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with the tape, go for the book if at all.
The tape is mostly an advert for the technique and the clinic.

With the book, at least you can skip to the interesting parts.
