Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's about time! America's number one "professional organiser", Julie Morgenstern has written an organising book that covers a new way of looking at the task of organising effectively without labelling or blaming the person behind the lack of organisation. Rather, she says, people who don't organise just never learned how to organise, through no fault of their own--after all, it's not a skill that's taught in school. That said, she gets down to work helping you figure out an organising system that will really work for you, not a system based on filing concepts or special storage units.

Morgenstern's "from the inside out" system begins by laying out the possible reasons for a failure of organisation: technical errors (like having a complex organising system that breaks down), external realities (like not enough space for your belongings), and psychological obstacles (like fear of failure--or success). Then, her Analyze and Strategize steps help create a plan of action based on your needs and goals, and the brief chapter called "Attack: Getting the Job Done" offers basic ideas for making space. The largest section of the book, "Applying What You've Learned", addresses the specifics of organising workspaces, home offices, living spaces and storage areas. Each section has a "How Long Will It Take?" box that gives a realistic time estimate, and Morgenstern's "Julie's No-Brainer Toss List" for each area gives the permission and encouragement that most of us have been waiting for to get rid of things we will never use again. The section at the end, "Tackling Time and Technology", is worth its weight in PalmPilots. Whatever your organising issues are, you are not a hopeless case, and you don't need special equipment--just a little understanding of the problem and a willingness to plan before diving in.--Scarlet Harper

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-saving, 28 Oct 2001
If you watch your days passing by leaving you with heaps of things you're not sure you need, but well, you might, you know... if you spend huge portions of those days searching for the remains of other days.. when you're lost, confused, drowning in paper and things - well, it's time to buy Julie Morgenstern's book. It is so simple, really, you think 'Why didn't I think of this before?'. The fact is, I didn't. I got the book, did the course, and managed to control my 'disorganization', as well as my partner's chronic one. We opened all those embarassing, demotivating 15-year old boxes and ended up throwing most of those stored essentials away. What a rush! Free at last to ride into the sunset! Wish you all the same, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and obvious, but very effective., 13 Jan 2003
By A Customer
My wife scoffed at this book when I first bought it. However, before the day was out, she'd read two thirds of it, had drawn up the relevant lists Julie Morgenstern requires you to do and was badgering me to do the same.
Julie helps you tackle the tasks of organising right from the start; she helps you identify what you want to achieve, helps you plan your tasks before wading in, and, importantly, shows you how to keep yourself motivated to finish it. It's all rather obvious stuff, though, but sometimes it takes someone else to point the obvious out.
If you're not a fan of Dawna Walter in the BBC series "The Life Laundry", be assured that Julie Morgenstern doesn't encourage you to simply throw everything out into an industrial crusher. She does say it's OK to keep things and shows you how to identify what you want to keep and find homes for it.
Does it work? Our flat is now less cluttered, everything has its own home and it keeping it that way takes just moments. A very readable and effective book, but it's not a quick fix - you will need to put a bit of time and effort in! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPACE, 13 Sep 2001
By A Customer
The first two chapters tell you about the methods she uses and how to use them. The book shows you that organizing is as easy as SPACE (Sort, Purge, Assign, Containerise, Equalize). She helps you find out why it's messy in your home or office and how to change it. The rest of the book is is dealing with different parts of the house. She also shares the stories of some of her customers, which makes you feel better because they were messier and managed to get organized. This book shows you that you can get organized no matter how messy you are when starting out.
