Product Description

Product Description
'Invisible' disabilities are among the most distressing of all childhood problems. The range of these is wide and overlapping symptoms can confuse even the experts. Although the nature of the handicap may not be understood at first, the symptoms which are visible are most distressing to both parent and child. And often, as parents come to terms with the family crisis, in a desperate attempt to blame somebody for what is happening, the marriage itself may be in jeopardy. This is not a medical book but instead focuses on the social and emotional impact of these disabilities on the whole family. What are these hidden disabilities? The most common are: Attention Deficit Disorder, Auditory Attention Problems, Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Dyslexia, Asthma, Depression, Allergies, Learing Difficulties and Speech and Language Problems. This book will help you find your way through the maze of conflicting advice and offers support to those parents who have a child who is not 'quite right'.

About the Author
Jill Curtis is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist working in private practice in London. She is a frequent broadcaster on family matters and has her own 'help-site' dedicated to parents and grandparents at: www.familyonwards.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book with something for every parent, 17 Oct 2003
By K Stowe (Cleveland, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have read this book myself and found it to be very easy to read and understand as the author does not use 'jargon' and it kept me interested from beginning to end. I was very impressed with the way Jill Curtis comes across as friendly and caring and really wanting to help parents. Most of the stories and experiences are provided by parents and children themselves and, as a parent of a disabled daughter, I found reading the book to be uplifting, encouraging, sad, emotional, informative and supportive. There were times when I read other parents experiences that I was reduced to tears of sadness, other times when I though "That's exactly what I feel" and times when I was uplifted and encouraged by the very personal stories. I found the book to be very useful and I think all parents will find something in it which applies to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, 5 Oct 2002
By J W Newton (Leighton Buzzard, England) - See all my reviews
I found the writing style first class because Jill Curtis manages to sound friendly, interested and available throughout. This makes difficult and emotional subjects easy to read and absorb because one feels Jill is there to help rather than lecture. Secondly, I thought the detailed discussion of the various possible problems easy to follow because Jill Curtis avoids the 'show-off' jargon. A pleasant easy approach that kept me interested, even in those sections which did not apply directly to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars impressed, 8 Sep 2002
By A Customer
I was very impressed with this book - and particularly with the balanced and accurate reporting of Tourette Syndrome (a refreshing change).
My son has a diagnosis of TS, but this book may well have helped us identify it a lot sooner.
I've also suspected that he may have dyspraxia - and reading the section on dyspraxia confirms it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for learning how to cope ...
Hidden Disability is excellent for parents trying to figure out how to cope with a child that is 'different'. Accessible, quick to read, with a good index of UK support resources.
