4.0 out of 5 stars A good book, 29 Nov 2002
As a biology student who finds it quite hard to grasp many key points from my notes, I found this book very good and quite easy to understand. Its specific to the AQA A syllabus and contains most key points in short summaries. It has a good use of pictures and some diagrams but the Index is muddled in some areas. I also found that a couple of topics didn't go into enough detail and you have to rely on your notes. It has some good past paper questions too, but unfortuntaely no answers!! I find this quite dissapointing as you can't see what you are/aren't getting right. I also have the follow up book which is good! But still no answers to the questions!

3.0 out of 5 stars AAArgh!, 21 Jun 2002
By Jenny (Greater London) - See all my reviews
This should have been a good textbook. To be fair, it's ok - the syllabus is covered in just enough detail, and the brief introductions to the chapters do give a bit of extra background, but I get the feeling that this was rushed to the printers in just too much of a hurry. The index has become a running joke in our Biology class, but the fact that you don't really need an index is what I don't like about this text. Now, this might seem odd to all the syllabus-obsessed powers that be out there, but there are students (myself included) who are actually interested in the subject for its own sake, and would like a bit more depth on occasion. I found that there simply wasn't enough meat to this book, so I bought one of the old-style A-level texts after the first term. I'm glad I did.

By all means buy this book as a core text - it could be a whole lot worse - but don't expect any more from it than that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing , not recommended for use as a class text, 13 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Having eagerly awaited the publication of this text book, particularly as it is written by the Chief Examiner for the new AQA Biology specification, it is very disappointing to find that the content and layout of the book is not up to a comparable standard to some of the other books that have been published recently for the other specifications. The diagrams are small and in some cases misleading and there are no self assessment questions with answers at the back of the text for students to check their knowledge and understanding. The assignments at the end of each chapter give useful extension activites however, and the past examination questions are also helpful.
