5.0 out of 5 stars A Long Way from Chicago by Robert Peck, 16 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This children's book is about a boy and his sister's annual visit to their granma. It was a brilliant read, fast-paced, fun and wacky from the very first page. The book is written from the perspective of the young grandson, and his descriptions of small-town life and the antics his granma gets up to are hilarious. Throughout the book Robert Peck paints a vivid picture of this larger-than life granma who seizes life by the throat, so to speak, and isn't afraid of anything or anyone. The end is so moving, in such an understated way, that I shed a tear! I would heartily recommend this book to anyone, whether they be boy or girl, adult or child, although I think the ideal age range is eight years and upwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story spans several summers with events of the world, 10 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Joe and his sister go to visit Grandma, a tough old woman every summer for several years. Adventure and excitement is lurking around every corner in Grandma's small town; from the dead body of a drunk to the World War 1 flying ace at the fair, this book is phenominal

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Robert Peck, for a masterpiece!, 3 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I can't wait to read this book aloud to upper graders! Thank you to Robert Peck for giving us Grandma, with all her spunk and verve. I thought it was especially beautiful watching little bits of Grandma creeping into Mary Alice as she grew up. It is a great, subtle book about intergenerational relationships, but most of all it is a FUNNY book! By the end, I had shed many tears of both laughter and sadness. A Long Way from Chicago captures another time, but the stories and humor are timeless. By the fourth chapter I was reading veeeeeery slowly, because I didn't want it to end!
