Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

J Wallis Martin's first two books singled her out as a new mistress of the psychological thriller, and The Long Close Callis a worthy successor, with its tale of a man pushed to the edge by new stress and old demons. McLaughlan was not always the high-flier of London's Flying Squad; once he was a disturbed small boy whose brother had mysteriously disappeared and whose father was one of the most notorious armed robbers of the sixties. When he kills the son of one of today's brutal criminal dynasties, his life is on the line--his son is abducted and he knows that to give himself up will mean slow torture rather than mere death. It is time to appeal to both his fathers--the ageing cop who befriended the family and the violent old man who deserted them; but both old men have questions of their own to ask... Tricksy in its flashes back and forward, spectacular in its understanding of stress and what it does to people, this is a powerful thriller with a nasty sense of irony and a bitter command of internal police politics and paranoia. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars So many try this sort of thing but this is a rare gem., 27 Dec 2001

I enjoyed The Bird Yard very much, and also A likeness in stone (despite the poor TV adaptation)
so I was looking forward to reading this and it lived up to all my expectations! Good characters, fast paced plot, not too much gratuitous gore...
please write more J. Wallis!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An intelligent and absorbing read, 3 May 2006
By Brian Butterly "Varied Taste" (Dorking UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was bought for me as a present and my expectation was not high. After a few pages however, I started to pay more attention and really enjoyed the author's style. I was intrigued by the various characters and there are quite a lot that we get to know. For me they were easy to picture and either have empathy with or, in a couple of cases, be a little wary of. I found I had to concentrate more than usual but the rewards and subtlety were worth the effort.
The story unfolds between London and Glasgow and the present and recent past. And the narrative sustains a good pace. There are some gruesome areas and some tense passages - all handled very well. This story was gripping, interesting and in the end satisfying to read. I will certainly look for other books by this author and pass this copy on to a friend who enjoys a good thriller. Superb

I bought the book expecting to find that the press reviews were hype, but it really is as good as they say, and you can't say fairer than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good solid read.
This is a great book to fill the cold winter night at home and if possible with an open fire burning away. It is the best she has written thuis far.
