5.0 out of 5 stars Sweeping tale of love, loss & heartache over the centuries, 9 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Grass Memorial (Hardcover)
This book has got it all: history, war, love, loss and heartache. Harrison blends the story of three very different characters and three very different periods in history together brilliantly. The story of Harry sent off to fight in the Crimean War, the story of Spencer the American Fighter Pilot sent to fight during the Second World War in Britian and the story of Stella, set during the present, the feisty lead singer/songwriter of a band who works too hard and plays too hard. At first the three stories run independantly but as the book progresses we see how various links unfold which connect the characters over the centuries. Compelling, page turning, and very moving this book has a great sense of the period of time in which the various stories are set and a great sense of the sweep of history. Loved it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unsatisfying, 13 Sep 2002
This review is from: The Grass Memorial (Hardcover)
Sarah Harrison is one of the finest writers in Britain. Her fluid and beautiful prose defies any categorisation as commercial or literary, and she is one of the few writers selling under the commercial category capable of writing truly "epic" fiction.

But for all that I found this novel disappointing, and that the "three stories in one" format didn't really work. There was so much initial promise in the premises of these three tales, and I was very excited about this book at the start. But that initial promise petered out as I read on, and I began to realise there would be no delivery. The Crimean war story is incredibly interesting and moving, but is really nothing more than an attempt to document one man's experiences of going to war; there is no real story as such. The modern day strand I liked least of all, as I found the characters to be objectionable. And again, putting it simply, nothing really interesting happened. The story set in the Second World War was most interesting of all, but even this one finally left me unmoved.

I felt severely short-changed and unfulfilled after reading all these stories. I think with The Grass Memorial Harrison is interested in exploring themes of love and war, rather than telling a story as such. But in the end, it just makes for an unsatisfying read. The three strands just don't talk to each other, and the whole novel just doesn't work.

3.0 out of 5 stars curate's egg, 4 Nov 2004
By P. Burt "nailsea_belle" (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Like the curate's egg, this novel was only "good in parts" and from my own point of view suffered greatly in comparison with "The Dreaming Stones" which I'd just finished reading. This is a novel of 3 intertwined stories, all based around the White Horse monument, hence the title of the book. I began the book with high hopes, having enjoyed her subsequent novel (as mentioned earlier). However, in this one, I really found it hard to empathize with, or even like, the characters. The story of the soldier in the Crimean war was hard to get into; I found those parts of the book hard going - long descriptions of men going to war and living through pretty grim times was pretty depressing and which I found myself skimming over in the end. OK if you like that sort of thing, but I quickly lost interest. I found the story of the soldier's sister in law waiting at home, and the female rock star (set in more modern times) sometimes hard to stick with, mainly because I didn't find either character very sympathetic, nor did I really care much about what happened to them in the end. This could have been much better, and the author evidently tried to avoid some of the weaknesses of this book in her next 3-handed novel "The Dreaming Stones".
