4.0 out of 5 stars Celebrity culture gone crazy, 12 Sep 2008
By Zara (Belfast) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I have to say I'm surprised by the bad reviews this book has received. Although the charcaters are not the most likeable, nor would I by any means describe this book as a lighthearted beach read, I found the book complelling reading. The author has her finger firmly on the pulse when accurately describing the champagne quaffing celeb scene in London where warm wine drinking and eating weird canapes on swizzle sticks while wondering where all the A-Listers have disappeared to, seems to be the order of the day. A tad depressing at times I did however find myself turning the pagers quickly to find out how the book would end and I put down the book when finished, glad that I am not a celebrity, and have no wish to be part of the pompous party scene where people try so desperately to get past the red rope, in order to be part of it all. A sharp, insightful if somewhat of a gloomy read.

4.0 out of 5 stars much better (and more original) than it appears, 9 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: My Canape Hell (Hardcover)
Initially this book seemed a typical (frothy) example of the genre but it slowly developed into something much deeper and more engrossing. Credit to the author for allowing the distintigration of the central character - very painful and poignant at times. I think the fact that a particular love story isn't that central to the main storyline makes it even more successful. The reader just gets drawn into the whole mess of Abby's life and the men seem fairly secondary characters - more importance is given to her failing friendship with Wendy.

However I think the cover and bookleaf description don't really convey the spirit of the book - which I would certainly highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing chick-lit must, 17 April 2003
By JLK (Canterbury, UK) - See all my reviews
I LOVED THIS BOOK - lots of laughing out loud and I couldn't put it down. True there maybe the odd spelling mistake but who cares, girly reading for me is for light relief, not a journey down English-Teacher-Lane. The character descriptions and details are hilarious.
I immediately read Shagpile, which is another entertaining book with well-obeserved true to life characters.
More books please I.E-Js!
