I really enjoyed Gill Paul's last novel, but this one shows real maturity. It's a thrilling portrait of life in Indonesia at a tough time, but she also weaves the various plots - romantic and criminal - so beautifully. It really is worth trying.

An excellent novel by an intelligent author I heard on the radio a few weeks back. The Indonesian setting is acutely drawn, hugely memorable, and the perfect backdrop to a steamy love story cum thriller. It's impossible not to be drawn into the confused but noble mind of the main character, interestingly and powerfully written in the first person. One senses that Ms Paul has experienced something of this sort of saga in her own life? I read it in a sitting and highly recommend it to anyone who wants a novel that tweaks your curiosity to a knife-point, and sets you deep in a country about which we know very little. Excellent.

I started this book lying in bed and just had to carry on until I'd finished it. It's a real page-turner, but it's an intelligent book too - and it's moving. It manages to combine the story of an outrageous medical fraud and a very unusual love story - all on the background of the Indonesian currency crisis and the collapse of normal society. I loved it.
