5.0 out of 5 stars An antidote to schmaltz for the romantic., 2 Jun 2002
By A Customer
I love this book and read it every year. It is romantic without being schmaltzy or sentimental. The heroine, Helen, is a cynical, intelligent, bitchy, strong woman. She likes to cultivate flirtations but has always stayed in control of her emotions until she becomes obsessed with the love letter she inadvertently receives.
The setting is vividly evoked, making me want to go and live in this small seaside town, run to the beach to swim every morning and frequent Helen's pink bookshop.
The best thing about it, though, is the way it makes you catch your breath in memory of overwhelming passion, though it is never for a second trite or gag-makingly romantic. Schine swipes at cliches though she retains awareness that love is inherently cliched, especially if you're not the one involved. The novel keeps a sharp edge and a literary soul whilst being the best kind of candy-flossy summer treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, evocative book, 16 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Love Letter (Paperback)
This book was a rather suprising gift from my husband, and probably not one I would have choosen for myself, but once I read it I was really impressed. I'm not sure what it is about the book that made me enjoy it so much, but there are some fabulous moments like when Johnny as his shirt off in the shop and Helen tells him to put it back on again - the scene is heavy with an unspoken challenge.

Cathleen Schine makes you empathise with and like her characters even though they're a bit eccentric.

The internal monolgues are really effective at getting at the heart (and depth) of Helen and Johnny's feelings - their passions fairly crackle on the page. In fact it's so well done that the fact that Helen is having a relationship with her friend's teenage son drifts past, on a cloud of destiny and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really wonderful book!, 27 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I LOVE this book. It's one of my all-time favourites which I have read many times. The main character is an excellent, fun, strong woman who doesn't take any s**t. The story flows along quickly and interestingly. When I first read it (cheesy as it may sound) it really reminded me of being in love. It's a sunny book with wonderful characters. Personally, I couldn't praise it enough.
