2.0 out of 5 stars Very hard to get through, 2 Feb 2003
By A Customer
I got this for my wife as she is worried about her weight while she is pregnant. It sounded good but was a disappointment. Compared to other books we have got, which are user-friendly and clearly presented, this is well structured but very hard to wade through. There are some useful sections that break down weight gain in weeks 1-7, 8-14 etc, and lists of essential nutrients and vitamins... but that really sums up the book: it is mainly lists, categories and Question & Answers. There is not a single picture, photo or diagram. In the end it comes across more like a government information pamphlet or a Bureau discussion document. There are some useful things to pull out but you have to find and choose them and it is very hard going to work though it. For a pregnant woman who is tired and worn out, this book is too hard to work through. My wife gave up and so did I !

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, 24 Feb 2003
By fiona (London) - See all my reviews
I've always been concerned about my weight and was really scared that having a baby would spell disaster for my body. Cheung's book reassured me every step of the way. I learned exactly how much I should expect to gain and after my baby how to sensibly get back in shape. It was comforting to have a book with me that explained everything simply and clearly and got straight to the point without any pictures and diagrams of perfect looking happy mums - cause let's face it pregnancy isn't the easiest of times for women with body image anxieties. I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on both a healthy baby and a healthy mum and felt reassured that having a baby wasn't going to ruin my figure. When I had my baby I lost my weight sensibly and slowly as the book suggested - without it I would have been tempted to crash diet which would have ultimatley made weight management much harder for me so I am really glad I took the time to read it and prepare myself for the post pregnancy weeks and months. I'm now back to a weight I feel comfortable with and am even thinking about number two. I'd recommend this book to any expectant mother concerned about weight gain before, during and after baby and how to manage it all.
