4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining insight into the workings of the industry, 21 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This book tracks the rise of Nintendo from the early-mid 80's, up to the release of the Super NES. (Super Famicom) It tells how Nintendo, originally a japanese playing card company, rose into one of the most successfull businesses ever.

It explains how retailers were unwilling to stock video games after the crash of the industry in the early 80's, and the techniques Nintendo used to persuade the public and retailers that their console was something new. The author obviously interviewed many major key figures in the industry to get a lot of the information in this book, and it shows. The descriptions of the lives of some of the top people in Nintendo is well written and interesting.

The only slightly disappointing thing about this book is that there isn't much information on the actual games or the hardware that made Nintendo's fortune. This is strictly a company history. The section on the legal issues surrounding Tetris drags on a bit too.

An entertaining and enjoyable read, essential for anyone wishing to enter Nintendo or the video games business.
