5.0 out of 5 stars The bridge between Latham and Tomlinson, 9 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Stephen Coote writes a very scholarly book which is a must for all serious students of Pepys and his times. His study covers that period from when he closed his diary for the last time, through his retirement from public service until he died in 1703.

The boook is very thoroughly researched, and is a very readable account of not only the the turbulent times that prevailed in Restoration England, but the impact it had on Pepys during his career in Admiralty and in his private life.

The book answers many of the questions about the historical context of the famous Diarist, and is in my opinion an important link for anyone wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the man that was Samuel Pepys and the events of his life and times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly gripping read!, 26 Nov 2001

This review is from: Samuel Pepys: A Life (Paperback)
I haven't read Samuel Pepys' diaries but I was certainly encouraged to do so after reading Stephen Coote's biography. I thought it incredibly well researched without being dry.
I thoroughly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK if you haven't read the diaries!, 13 Jan 2001
By crowsnest@noos.fr (Strasbourg, France) - See all my reviews
The book is well written and well researched but left me feeling a little cheated as I have read the diaries of Samuel Pepys and I felt that the middle section of Coote's book (which covers the diary years) did not bring much additional material to the originals. There is some background information about politics and society but that part of the book really feels and reads like a summary of the original Pepys. Coote's sometimes moralising tone about Pepys's love-life is also disappointing. The chapters of Coote's book which cover Pepys life before and after the diaries are much more interesting and worth reading.
