Disappointed, but not too much. Having read all of Nicol's previous novels, I picked this one up with some real excitement and expectation. I was disappointed. It trundles along, with typically graphic and intense details surrounding the action scenes. The characters are too thin and not very imagineable. Apart from that it is better than many other books I have read. This book certainly won't put me off reading Nicol's work again. If you haven't read any other of his novels, try and avoid this as your first, as it may not inspire you to read anything else by this normally wonderful author.

This is a great book by a great author! And I find it very exciting to follow people from "our world" getting involved in a conflict in the "third world", and see how they tackle it. This book takes place in Sierra Leone, and we get a great insight in how gruesome the civil war there is... I guess the message by the author is something like this: "Don't go to Sierra Leone, unless you have one of the greatest reasons in the world!"

A story they say is only as good as the characters in it. Sadly, the characters in this offering from John Nichol are little more than cardboard cut-outs. Apart from that the plotting is quite good, and the tale rattles along at a brisk enough pace...
