5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent...........I look forward to reading the next one, 28 May 2001
By A Customer
This is the second novel in the Hawkenlye series based in Southern England during the late 12th Century. The story surrounds a death in the Wealden Forest very close to Hawkenlye Abbey which is attributed to the mysterious "Forest People". Josse d'Acquin and Abbess Helewise, the two main characters, enter the forest and are witness to disturbing rituals as they lead you through their dangerous journey of investigation. The characters and the description of the surroundings are well done and you are transported back in time whilst reading the novel. The relationship between Josse and Helewise, based on friendship and respect, develops during the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy follower fo Ellis Peter Fans, 16 April 2003
This is the second book I have read of Alys Clare. This mystery related the deeper friendship that had started between Josse d'Acquin and the Abbess Helewise in the first book,"Fortune like the Moon". If you are a fan of Ellis Peters books, the Cadfael mysteries, you will really enjoy these books. They have a good feel about them. And they come with that, "once picked up you cant put down" feel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Druid's Curse, 24 Aug 2006
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)

Alys Clare's novels are like a breath of fresh air. I love medieval murder mysteries and there are certainly a lot of them about (thank goodness), but the authors books breathe new life into the period and her will they won't they situation that started with a strong friendship between Helewise and Sir Josse, holds the reader's attention as well. Don't be swayed into thinking that these books are written with the female reader in mind. They are for everybody, young and old, male or female. Alys Clare lives in Kent where the Hawkenlye mysteries are set.

A grove of oaks has been felled in the Wealden forest, but the man who felled them has met a violent end. People think back to the old ways and the days of the druids, when the oak was the one tree in all England that was sacred. Has the tree feller been cursed by the old magic of the Forest People.

Josse and Helewise enter the forest and are witness to strange events, but will these happening bring them any closer to solving the murder. Christianity is now the religion of England, but there are many who have not left the old ways behind.
