It is said that when Queen Elizabeth I was being entertained at Elvetham in Hampshire by the Earl of Hertford that after lunch at about three o'clock, ten of his servants were ordered to hang up lines on the lawn, squaring out what we see now as the form of a tennis court, for recreational purposes said to be "to the great liking of her Majesty".
