Amazon.co.uk Review
You can feel the heat and the dust, hear the shouts of the crowds pressing around you and imagine you were there, too.

Murray Watts' vivid re-telling of the life of Jesus--his miracles, teaching, life, death, resurrection and ascension into heaven--draws the reader into the sights and sounds and all the emotionally-charged atmosphere of first-century Palestine. In The Miracle Maker, Watts narrates many of the stories found in the four Gospels--and does so through the eyes of Tamar, Jairus' daughter, who was raised to life by Jesus.

Readers who know their New Testaments may wince at the mother of Jesus being called Miryam and may feel that, at times, Watts over-embellishes the original accounts. But there's no denying that many of the incidents in Jesus', life--such as his temptation in the desert, the miraculous haul of fish for Peter, the anointing of Jesus' feet with perfume and the raising of Lazarus--are re-told with a refreshing originality. Watts seems to want to bring the New Testament stories alive again and help people re-discover a remarkable Jesus.

The Miracle Maker has been made into a film, but those who choose to read the 300-page novel instead may find it does far more to stimulate their imagination than an animated film ever could. --Al Horn

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating interpretation of the Gospel story, 26 Jul 2000
By Wezzy (North Yorks, UK) - See all my reviews
Sometimes a little confusing as the scene shifts in time, but the overall picture portrayed by Murray Watts is one of the profound effect that Jesus had on so many aspects of everyday life. The inner turmoil of Jairus as he confronts his daughters illness and her possible cure, with his loyalty to the synagogue give a fascinating insight in to what must have happened when Christ's message began to hit home. I look forward to seeing the film.
