Book Description
It's 1917 and a turning point is fast approaching. Under the leadership of Teddy Roosevelt, and following a mad general named Custer, the Union has been invigorated. Using new technology, the Yankee forces attempt to break through the supposedly impregnable Tennessee trench line. But they have to climb of the bodies of previous failures to do it...

This series is rapidly being recognised as Harry's master-work. Epic, exciting and incredibly powerful, it deals with relatively recent past so cleverly that suspension of disbelief is never a problem…

4.0 out of 5 stars final book sets up for a new series, 26 Mar 2001
In this final chapter of the Great War series (despite us being promised tetraology).

It continues with the stories developed in the previous two (so i don't recommend the buy without reading the first two and possible even "how few remain" the prequel for this set) and is also done in the usual turtledove style jumping between many characters form all sides of the story and again shows he is willing to kill off characters we know if the story need it no matter how hated or liked the character is.

This time though the book does not end completely leaving a few loose ends setting up for another series (possible set on world war 2 rather the world war 1). - (rumours that this will be the American empire trilogy that starts this year)

Although not his best work it is typical turtledove and an enjoyable read.
