4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, intriguing, keeps you guessing, but oddly paced, 23 Feb 2001

Aka Mendoza In Hollywood, this is the third installment of Baker's 'Company' Trilogy. Set in California in 1862, Mendoza, a 'time travelling' Company cyborg is still coming to grips with the brutal death of her mortal lover 300 years previously. Baker has managed to craft a compelling story that successfully combines the genres of adventure, science fiction and romance. While focused on the more immediate events in the troubled life of her heroine, the book also casts a wonderfully sinister light on the motives of the mysterious 'Dr Zeus Corp', overseer of Mendoza and her immortal colleages. A great read that leaves you wanting more, my only problem was the pacing of this story. It wanders for awhile, with no apparent destination in mind. Events are disjointed and somewhat unrelated, although perhaps this can be excused as simply layering the characters and colouring the plot. Unfortunately it tends to come across as clumsy and forced more often than not. The climax of the novel is surprising and thrilling and a nice glimpse of things to come in the next novel, but also frantic and rushed. It seems a crowded conclusion after a somewhat idle plot. Fans of Baker's storytelling will enjoy this book as I certainly did, though it's not her strongest effort in an otherwise great sci fi concept.
