Amazon.co.uk Review

Divorced from his wife, recovering from a coma and tired of living in Calusa, Florida, Matthew Hope has reached the end of his spiritual tether. When Jill Lawton hires him to find her husband, who's been seen "up north" with another woman, Hope thinks it's just another failed marriage ... until a body washes up on the beach with no face and Jack Lawton's driver's licence in his pocket.

Hope enlists the help of Steve Carella, from the 87th precinct, and together they find that the Lawtons weren't the ordinary, wholesome, tennis club members that they appeared to be. Jack Lawton is planning to steal a prized Greek artefact from the Calusa museum. Jill has a plan of her own, and both of them are sleeping with Melanie Schwartz, who is also sleeping with Peter Donofrio and Ernest Corrington-- both ex-cons.

The Last Best Hope is a wild ride. It starts out as a sleepy, love-gone-bad story and twists itself into a tightly wound tale of murder, deception and kinky sex. Almost every character is unpredictable and almost every character is a suspect. Ed McBain's two series characters--Hope and Carella--make a powerful team and the friendship that develops through the book lends the story an important sympathetic element. -- Mara Friedman --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars The latest Matthew Hope novel- and maybe the last!, 18 April 1999
By A Customer
Although an enjoyable read, The Last Best Hope, is not up to the high standard of previous books. After Matthew's return to action following his time spent in coma in the last book, he appears to have a straight forward case of finding the missing husband to investigate. However, as usual, McBain has woven an intricate web of a story and produces his usual surprises. However, due to a change in his usual style of writing, McBain discloses facts using past tense incerpts which for me affected the overall flow of the story. There is also less of McBain's excellent dialogue.

For the first time, McBain provides for a cross-over from his 87th Precinct novels with Matthew getting some help from Steve Carrella.

Because of the style, the final chapter is something of an anti-climax, as the reader knows what is going to happen, and why, already.

Will this be the end of Matthew Hope novels? Both the title of the novel and it's ending suggest so. I hope not, mainly because as a fan I want to see how Hope's relationship with his ex-wife now develops and also because this would be a disappointing story to end the otherwise excellent series on.
