The title sounds promising and - to say the least - it lives up to its promises., EESI, This is an excellent book for the more practised and competent video engineers who need to extend their knowledge from analogue to digital broadcasting... the complex technology... is put across in a clear and concise manner., Electrical and Electronic Service Informer, Those seeking a capability and fluency in the many concepts and mechanisms of MPEG and DVB standards would do well to investigate this book... goes a lon way towards encapsulating in one handy and inexpensive volume much that is essential to a broad appreciation of this important and still developing technology., The Institution of Electrical Engineers,

Product Description

This text provides an accessible introduction to digital TV. Assuming only a basic knowledge of electronics, it describes the underlying principles of this new technology and its implementation through the European DVB System (Digital Video Broadcasting), which has been adopted by all the member states of the European Union as well as many other countries throughout the world. After an overview of analogue TV systems and video digitization forms, the author then examines the various steps of signal processing - taken in order from transmission to reception to facilitate an understanding of the architecture and function of the main blocks of the Integrated Receiver/Decoder (IRD) or "set-top" box.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well presented, unconfused and helpful, 5 May 1999
By A Customer
The subject of the book lends itself well to long words, difficult concepts and "techno-babble". M Benoit presents the technology and science in a manner which avoids the confusion, that is presented in the other works I have seen on this subject.

This book, though not a definitive guide to DVB, MPEG-2 and digital television, will allow a new-comer to understand the principles behind the technology, while allowing an analogue TV engineer to easily make the transission to digital media.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent introduction to the european DVB system, 7 April 1999
By A Customer
This book is an excellent overview of the system perspective of a DVB system (satellite, cable. or terestrial). It includes a good discussion on MPEG-2 and transport and program streams.
