Product Description
Media Education Journal
All in all an excellent book --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description
This text outlines the basic principles and practice in all main areas of surgery. In Section One the reader is taken through the stages undergone by a patient progressing through surgery and convalescence. Section Two covers the various specialties of surgical nursing, including neurosurgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, ophthalmic, breast, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynaecological, vascular and orthopaedic surgery. Each of these chapters is written by an author with specialised knowledge in the field, and reflects their own personal style and approach. The chapters offer practical suggestions for the pre- and post-operative care associated with the most common operative procedures, and consider long term implications of surgery and convalescence. Recent developments and future trends are identified, including day surgery, and the growth of endoscopic and minimally invasive procedures.

This book has been developed for and with the help of Project 2000 students and is, therefore, particularly relevant to their needs. As such it incorporates research-based material and interactive student activities. Patient quotes enliven the text and provide valuable insight into the patient's perspective, which can easily be overlooked by busy nurses. There is also a helpful and extensive glossary of key terms, as well as references and further reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Surgical Nursing for Student Nurses, 17 Jul 2001
Bridging the gap between theory and practice, this book gives an overview of the main surgical specialisms that are likely to be encountered on a general surgical ward or on placement during nurse training. It gives the reader the opportunity to relate what they see on the wards to the theory taught in the classroom by setting useful tasks for the student nurse. Covering Cardiac Surgery to Urology, it enables staff nurses and student nurses alike to understand the surgical interventions a patient has to undergo and their relative needs. It gives tips as to how some of these needs can be observed and met allowing for fuller understanding of the individual patient cared for on a surgical ward. This book is brilliant for an introduction to surgical nursing and should be top of your list before you venture onto a surgical ward.

5.0 out of 5 stars The choice to get you through a surgical placement., 17 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Introduction to Surgical Nursing, has been my personal bible through out surgical placements. I first looked at the book in a library and have since purchased it to aid me through my last placements. It is well structured and easy to either read or use as a referance tool while on placement. The use of patients thoughts and feelings is particulaly helpful in helping you to answer patients questions perioperatively.
The contributors of the book have provided the readers with information that is invaluable to increase your knowledge and aid you in treating patients.
The book highlights all forms of surgery that student nurses are likely to come in contact with. This coupled with the extensive student activities to be done and the easy to read nature of the book and diagrams ensures that the student has a good foundation knowledge of surgical nursing before finishing your course.
