Book Description
This text outlines the basic principles and practice in all main areas of surgery. In Section One the reader is taken through the stages undergone by a patient progressing through surgery and convalescence. Section Two covers the various specialties of surgical nursing, including neurosurgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, ophthalmic, breast, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynaecological, vascular and orthopaedic surgery. Recent developments and future trends are identified, including day surgery, and the growth of endoscopic and minimally invasive procedures.

It gives the reader the opportunity to relate what they see on the wards to the theory taught in the classroom by setting useful tasks for the student nurse. Covering Cardiac Surgery to Urology, it enables staff nurses and student nurses alike to understand the surgical interventions a patient has to undergo and their relative needs. It gives tips as to how some of these needs can be observed and met allowing for fuller understanding of the individual patient cared for on a surgical ward. I first looked at the book in a library and have since purchased it to aid me through my last placements. It is well structured and easy to either read or use as a referance tool while on placement. The use of patients thoughts and feelings is particulaly helpful in helping you to answer patients questions perioperatively. The contributors of the book have provided the readers with information that is invaluable to increase your knowledge and aid you in treating patients. The book highlights all forms of surgery that student nurses are likely to come in contact with.
