5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing work of fiction., 17 Jan 2001
By Patrick Healey - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Chess Garden (Paperback)
This is such an ambitious work of fiction that it's astonishing that the author pulls it off. But he does. The book mixes the horrors of war with the life of turn of the century america, and nineteenth century Europe with ease, and then intertwines this with an allegorical tale about the fictional antipodes. This is populated by games pieces (chess men etc.), who are alive, and involved in conflicts of their own.

It was only when I read this book a second time, I truly appreciated how great it is, and how the intricate strands of the different tales are closely woven together.

I read it every year, and I'm not ashamed to say it still brings a tear to my eye. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unsung genius, 5 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Chess Garden (Paperback)
I'm constantly amazed at how few people have heard of this excellent book. So I'm writing a few words...

Basically: the book is phenomenal. The three intertwined stories are so complex in their handling of symbolism, character and academic debate that I was almost convinced, for a while, that they had to be based on a true story. I cannot recommend it more highly.

This is a heart-warming tale, and I hope that it catches your imagination as it did mine, and feeds your dreams for years to come. Enjoy!!

3.0 out of 5 stars modern day fable.goes on a bit though...., 11 Dec 2002
This review is from: The Chess Garden (Paperback)
The start of this book really got my attention and I became keen to find out all about the mysterious island of the antipodes. But as the story progressed I began to get the impression that this was some kind of workshop experiment the author had been doing. With the different stories leaping all the over the place I wasn't sure whether to be excited by the style of writing or baffled as to where the whole thing was going, or if in fact it was going anywhere. I suspect theres reams of this stuff the author took out or could put in without making any real difference other than to lengthen the book.

Well written with some beautifully realised characters, some of it does unfortunately end up being just so much 'Brothers Grimm' fable.

Captivating, in an irritating sort of way...
