This book was originally published in something like 1975 - and its age shows. In fact, it feels more like a 1950s text book. All the 'one star' ratings below give an indication of the way many people will feel when confronted with this sort of text.However, I beg to differ. Much as I too would like to see a modern course, particularly one which includes CDs, this is the best we've got. In a world without an English/Catalan course with audio materials, this level of pronunciation guide, which includes use of the International Phonetic Alphabet, is essential. Catalan is not a 'one basic pronunciation fits all situations' language like Spanish. In speech, it employs strong and weak forms of words and syllables, modification of sounds in combination with each other and elision. Now, as all the explanations are written in English, I see no reason why a Catalan native speaker should find it easier to understand this book than a Brit. In fact, quite the |
