3.0 out of 5 stars An easy "dig in when you want " book, 18 April 2002
By A Customer
This is a fairly comprehensive statistics book that does not dwell on mathematical ideas too deeply. Yes there are equations, but hey - why are you doing statistics otherwise? The exercises are easily laid out with comments etc to follow. I found though that while it gave a basic grounding it was not quite as in depth as I needed. It's not quite statistics for utter dummies with all the maths explained, more like a look at research, the different ways to interpret data and how best to present it.

In conjunction with other texts I found this useful giving a basic understanding of stats - although not telling me why I was putting myself through hell!! Reasonably priced and giving a good oversight, however I think for someone studying the subject you will out grow this rather quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very basic, but very clear, honest, and encouraging, 12 Mar 2008
I first read this book at least 2 years ago, but I still look in it every now and then to refresh my memory.

True, this is not a real statistics book: it covers very few commonly-used tests, and it does not come with many exercises (there are only a few very basic ones). BUT, IN ALL FAIRNESS, THIS DOES NOT PRETEND TO BE A REAL STATISTICS BOOK!

Rather, the author's opbvious goal is to present an "hors d'oeuvre", or an advertisement for statistics. And what a great ad this is!!! It really makes you want to continue watching (well, ... and thinking). After you've read it (and it really is easy and enjoyable reading), you'll feel enough confidence to jump into deeper waters. All you need is enough motivation to read the first couple of chapters (which are easy), and then it flows on its own.

So, do not buy that book thinking it is something that it is not: it will not quite take you as far as being ready to click on "Stata" and start working.

But do buy it if you've never heard of statistics before, or if you've heard of it but had never dared confronting it. In that case, you will learn enough to be able (a) to understand a statistical argument, including where it may be wrong, and (b) to appreciate the beauty of statistics. Importantly, you will achieve these goals better if you buy this book than if you buy any competing product, either in book-format or on DVD (WITH ONE EXCEPTION FOR THOSE WHO REMEMBER, OR WHO ARE NOT AFRAID OF A BIT OF MATHS: BULMER'S CLASSIC "PRINCIPLES OF STATISTICS").
