3.0 out of 5 stars Off the Rails? Not half!, 19 Sep 2006
By Mr. D. Mckenzie "Travel fiend" (Newcastle, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What you think of this book will depend on how you get along with the author; here Lisa St. Aubin de Teran gives an account of her life from early childhood, one which is far from conventional. There are accounts of a trip to Leningrad to help her estranged father spend his royalties - he could not be paid ooutside of the Soviet Union for his writing - and an encounter at the age of 16 which changed Lisa's life completely.

For me, the background played too significant a role and I would have preferred more on the travel aspect of the book. With mental health problems affecting Lisa and several other members, this book reminded me alot of the travel writing of Jenni Diski, interesting on the whole but a little frustrating if the rail aspect is what you want to read about.

In spite of these complaints, the book is rather gripping - one simply wonders what bizarre story you're going to hear next!

3.0 out of 5 stars Confessions of a train addict., 13 Nov 2007
Lisa St. Aubin de Teran has had an extraordinarily colourful life. She's had more husbands than I've had hot dinners and been to more countries than Marco Polo. I would say this book is a mixture of life story and wanderlust traveller, so you might be annoyed if you want a straight forward travel account. Personally I found her life story more interesting than her descriptions of trains and train stations. Her writing style is a little chaotic in places, you think you're in Italy and she suddenly mentions Mexico or the States, it can get a bit bewildering at times. But still, an enjoyable book that will give you itchy feet.
