When I was young (well, much younger than I am today) I was always taught that, however good preachers were, folk actually learned their theology from the hymns they sang. Hence the popularity and brilliance of C. Wesley's great hymns, which are packed with Biblical references and poetry in every line, not just one very vague theological idea in the whole composition.

The editorial panel almost boast about the fact that this hymnal is 'doctrine-free', for fear someone might get upset. This is concern about 'party spirit' gone crazy, since the result is completely bland and uninspiring.

The 'new' song section is a very limited selection from not the best of c.1978. The 'new' hymns are largely from the pens of only about half a dozen modern hymn writers, fitted to old tunes.

But worst of all, is the 'modernisation' of well-loved traditional hymns. Sometimes it just grates. But sometimes it causes misunderstanding.

If you really want a 'middle of the road' modern collection, "Hymns Old & New" is to be preferred.

the condition of the book is good. unfortunately not enough information on the web site, i wanted a music score version and i got the lyrics version instead.

i think the hymns in this book is great, many hymns still speak deep into my heart.
