4.0 out of 5 stars A Gem in its Day, 16 Aug 2006
By JimR "Jimbo" (Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Overman Culture (Paperback)
Ah yes... I remember back to the hot summer of '76, lazing in my backyard - school holidays and all that. This book was in my hands from a.m. to evening. It was the first book I had read by Edmund Cooper and it made me hungry for more - though his other works never matched up to this novel for me. It tells a story with many themes. It tells the adventures of a group of teens growing up in a very strange London indeed. Queen Victoria is on the throne, her Prime Minister is Churchill and we are at war with jet fighters battling dirigibles across the shielded skyline! It is the twists and turns in this novel that make it Cooper's finest work.
Thirty years later, I still remember this work fondly and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to try Edmund Cooper.
(I really wish his work could be reprinted - they are all competently crafted Sci Fi with a spark of originality).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Read, 24 Sep 2008
This review is from: The Overman Culture (Paperback)
I can not add more then the last reviewer, except that I believe that this author is much under rated, and yet the themes/plots lines are as fresh today as the day they were written. This book, is a very good introduction to his work. Enjoy!
