The usual Nigel Tranter stuff.

Brave men, battles, cunning generalship, dastardly villains, heaving bosoms...., all set in the extremely turbulent times of the fall of Charles I.

A good read. I have to wonder whether Montrose was really as virtuous as depicted (or Archibald Campbell as black), but that doesn't detract from the book. One thing that does seem clear, surely Montrose was a fool to 'put his trust in princes' (Charles and his family).
