5.0 out of 5 stars An absorbing saga of Victorian Britain, 15 Sep 2001
By Kathy Lang (Cornwall, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Theirs Was the Kingdom is the second in a trilogy about people, events and the life and times of Victorian Britain. It's an old friend of mine: I've read the trilogy three or four times, and find it a great holiday read - it's too absorbing to risk having around when work is pressing. Delderfield uses the fortunes of the Swann family to portray Victorian society as Britain develops from a small but energetic nation to the head of the greatest empire of modern times. But Delderfield was a man of his times too, and, although by trade a journalist, he loves the stately prose of a more leisured age than ours. So it's not for the concentration-challenged; but if you appreciate good writing and an absorbing story, you'll value every page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweeping family saga continues towards the twentieth century, 16 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This tome continues where "God is an Englishman" left off, relating the fortunes and failures of the children of Adam and Henrietta Swann. They had nine in total, so there is plenty to tell. Delderfield is a leisurely writer, occupied as much with the changing landscape of Victorian England as he is with the changing lives of his characters. This is not a book for the faint-hearted reader raised on sound bites. It is a book of immense detail and characterization--an entire generation has been created in the mind of one man, and he takes nearly 900 pages to present it to his reader. If you like your books long, if you relish the magnificence of English history, and if you've already read "God is an Englishman", then this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of a compelling saga...., 10 Jan 2000
By A Customer
I felt compelled to submit this review after being shocked by the low overall rating og this book. I found it to be an excellent second piece to the trilogy and a joy to read. Not for the reader who's looking for a "quick read," but engaging enough to make the time fly, Theirs Was the Kingdom--like it's companions in the Swann saga--is an excellent story, and you'll reach the last page thankful that there's more to come. Don't miss it: curl up by the fire w/a good glass of wine and enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars slow and lightweight
If you want a quiet, slow read over a long period of time, this is a good book. It is harmless. Nothing ever happens to anyone that is in any way harsh or jarring. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars predictable po-faced family saga
I first read this book a few years ago. I assume I finished it. I recently re-read it but I'm afraid I gave up half way through. Read more
