Product Description

Product Description
Jocelyn has just returned from the Boer War with an incurably lamed leg. He heads for the cathedral town or Torminster, where he recovers his love of life in the invigorating company of his cousin, Hugh Anthony, his grandfather, the Canon and Henrietta.

About the Author
Elizabeth de Beauchamp Goudge was born on April 24th 1900 in Wells, Somerset, where her father was Principal of Wells Theological College. Although she had privately intended writing as a career, her parents insisted she taught handicrafts in Oxford. She began writing in her spare time and her first novel ISLAND MAGIC, set in Guernsey, was a great success here and in America. GREEN DOLPHIN COUNTRY (1944) projected her to fame, netting a Literary Guild Award and a special prize of £30,000 from Louis B. Mayer of MGM before being filmed.

In her later years Elizabeth Goudge settled in Henley-on-Thames. She died on April 1st, 1984.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enchanting fairytale for grown-ups, 15 Mar 2002

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Goudge's gift is not only to make us believe that magic is possible but to convey a conviction that happiness will triumph over tragedy. This is the adult novel that precedes her matchless book for children Henrietta's House. Jocelyn, wounded in the war, returns to his grandparents' idyllic cathedral town Torminster and is immediately intrigued by the empty house he see there. The town decides he is to be their bookseller, as the previous occupant, a poet, Gabriel Ferranti has vanished and is suspected of having committed suicide. Jocelyn discovers Ferranti's papers, rescuing them from destruction and with the help of the beautiful actress he falls in love with succeeds in turning them into a play. Henrietta, the orphan adopted by the family, who had a mysterious bond with Ferranti, also has a hand in uncovering the truth about his whereabouts.
It is impossible to read this and not feel cheered up.
