Product Description

Review

"I have for sometime thought that the first edition was one of the best books ever published on supervision and this second edition actually does manage to improve on its initial success. I recommend it highly." - Nigel Leech Social Work Education 20030328

Product Description

Praise for the first edition of "Supervision in the Helping Professions": "The authors of this book really do know their subject well and have organised the presentation in a clear, systematic, readable style, refreshingly devoid of trans-atlantic jargon. It deals with all aspects of supervision and most importantly provides a meaningful blueprint about how useful and effective supervision can be. Let me recommend this book to you without reservation." - "Journal of the British Psychodrama Association"; and, "The one really powerful book in this area, a book that fundamentally changed the way in which people think about supervision and training." - Professor John McLeod, University of Abertay, Dundee, Scotland. The praise also includes: "A very readable book which is of immense help to anyone in a mentoring or supervisory relationship. It will appeal equally to educators, managers and students. All nurses will benefit from reading it. It is reasonably priced and well presented. Buy it." - Philip Burnard, "Nursing Times"; and, "This timely book offers the reader a comprehensive and practical guide to the complex issues inherent in the supervision of health and social services personnel, from the student on field-work placement to the most experienced therapist." - "British Journal of Occupational Therapy". This is an essential book for supervisors across all the helping professions which explores the purposes, models and different forms of supervision. It also addresses the needs of staff and examines how they can become more able in getting the support and supervision that they need. The first edition was a ground breaking book in the development of supervision and supervisor training. This second edition retains the models for supervising in individual, group, team and organizational settings but in addition adds new material, including: an up to date review of the new literature, practice and training in the field; a chapter on supervising across different cultures; new models on supervising in groups; and ways of introducing better supervision into organizations.

First Sentence
The late Donald Winnicott, paediatrician and psychoanalyst, introduced the concept of the 'good enough mother' - the mother who, when her child throws the food back at her, does not overreact to this event as a personal attack, or sink under feelings of inadequacy and guilt, but can hear this event as the child's expressing its temporary inability to cope with the external world. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to counselling supervision, 14 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This book is suitable for supervisors at all stages of their development, but will also be of interest to supervisee's who wish to gain maximum benefit from their own supervision.

It is a comprehensive guide and exploration of supervision. the book has four separate parts, with each part being divided into various chapters. Each part and chapter is relevant to a specific area of supervision and can stand-alone and be read individually. Alternatively, when read together the chapters form a detailed understanding and assessment of supervison, and taken as a whole, this book extensively covers the field of supervision.

Part One explores supervision from the supervisee's perspective and includes a chapter specifically designed to help the supervisee look in depth at both their supervision needs and the blocks they may have regarding receiving supervision.

In Part Two the emphasis is on becoming a supervisor and the actual process of supervising the supervisee. In this section Frameworks and Models of Supervision are explored, and the authors' 7-eyed Model of Supervision is explained in detail. Examples are used throughout to enable the reader to formulate of picture of how the model works in practice. There are also chapters on Supervisor training and development and Transcultural supervision.

Part Three considers the supervising of groups, teams and networks and includes a chapter on exploring group, team and peer group dynamics.

Part Four considers supervision in the organization context and considers both organization cultures and developing supervision in organizations.

The book is clearly written and, is easy and interesting to read in that the authors easily move from one area of supervision to another.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the skills of supervision, 2 May 2002
By Self-help junkie (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews

I have avoided reading texts on supervision for many years! As an experienced counsellor with a desire to move into supervision I just have not been able to engage with the literature on the subject. What a relief to find this book! It is written in a fresh, clear style that engaged me from the start. And in presenting a clear model for supervision which I could begin to use as I move into that role,it also challenges me to think more about how I use supervision in my own work as therapist. Highly recommended.
