Product Description

Amazon.co.uk review

Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism is a fabulously jaunty novel, beautifully written and brimming with the stuff of childhood dreams and imaginings.

Meet Molly Moon, an orphan living at Hardwick House with a bunch of other waifs and strays under the watchful eye of the harsh and hairy-faced Miss Anderson. Life at the orphanage is dismal (you know the routine), so Molly spends most of her time living through colourful daydreams. When she discovers a mysterious book on hypnotism in the local library she quickly learns that putting people into a trance can open doors to the most amazing adventures. First of all she hypnotises the entire audience at the local talent contest, bagging herself the prize money. With her winnings, she heads off to New York where her new-found skill enables her to become a Broadway superstar, with the world at her feet. But lurking in the background is sinister stranger with dastardly plans of his own...

Georgia Byng tells Molly Moon's story with a passionate flair that makes both the main character and the world in which she lives unforgettable. The "orphan makes good and beats the evil grown ups" theme is of course irresistible (after all, where would Harry Potter be if his parents had lived happily ever after?), but there is nothing formulaic about this book. Rather, readers are given the opportunity to let their imaginations run totally wild (be honest, who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to make absolutely everyone do exactly as you want them to?), allowing them to sneak a peak at a world where almost anything is possible.

Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism is a gem. Colourful characters, the bright lights of the big city, good versus evil, a little bit of magic and a definite moral to the tale: who could resist? The simple answer is don't even bother trying. Molly Moon will have young readers mesmerised before they even get to the end of the first chapter. Age 8 and over. --Susan Harrison

Review

Molly Moon has spent all her life in Hardwick House, a miserable orphanage run by hairy-faced Miss Adderson whose favourite punishment is making Molly clean the toilets with her toothbrush. But Molly realises that she possesses an extraordinary talent. A sparkling and funny adventure story.

A how-to manual rescues Molly Moon from her orphanage and its vile inhabitants in an odd mixture of grotesque silliness and moral inspiration. For ten years, Molly has been the lowest of the low. Wicked Miss Adderstone orders her to scrub all the toilets with her toothbrush as punishment for having a bath with more than ten centimeters of water. Mean Hazel Hackersly and Gordon Boils (who eats snot sandwiches) torture her incessantly. Her only friend, Rocky, moved to America. But a book of hypnotism endows Molly with hope. With her huge eyes and droning voice, Molly soon hypnotizes everyone in town. She sets off after Rocky and hypnotizes her way into stardom and a room at the Waldorf. Alas, Molly acquired the book by tricking a wicked professor who will stop at nothing to get the riches hypnotism promises. Molly's solutions to problems are amusing and all evil is redeemed. The salvation of archetypically evil (and archetypically disgusting) villains is dissatisfying in a tale that seems otherwise to be drawing on Roald Dahl and Lemony Snickett. Clumsy, but amusing. (Fiction. 8-11) (Kirkus Reviews)

5.0 out of 5 stars Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism, 3 Dec 2003
Georgia Byng is a great auther who is just as good as J.k. Rowlling. She has a wonderfull sense of imagination and she has caught my attention. I walked into the Book shop with my dad and we went to buy a book and I looked around and then I saw a Weird book with a dog on the Cover and I started reading it and I got Hypnotized by Georgia Byng's FANTASTIC Book, It has a very cool title: Molly Moon's Incredible Book Of Hypnotism and I recomend it to ages 8-99 even though in the book it says, it's for readers aged 8-12. I don't care. I recomend it to Evreyone who likes a Challange. Read this and your life Will bloom from a weed to a Gorgeous Rose. I can't wait until the next book I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Molly Moon Hypnotises her way to the top!, 24 May 2002

Fantastic, one of most riveting book I have read in ages. As orphan Molly sets out to conquer Manhattan, she soon realises that stardom isn't all that it is cracked up to be. Stalked by sneaky Mr Nockman,
who wishes to use her secret power to rob Shorrings Bank, she finds herself involved in a kidnapping and the search for her lost friend Rocky. A pacy and humerous read, Georgia Byng's first novel offers us a first class contender to the supremacy of Harry Potter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Molly Moon - an amazing read., 11 Oct 2004
Molly Moon is a great book because it is very well paced and brilliantly written. The characters were well developed and I really felt that I understood them. I especially liked the ending because it was quite emotional but still happy and I was pleased that it all ended happily. Molly is a great character because she is brave and different.

Georgia Byng is a fab writer who seems to really understand the age of her readers and makes the book easy to read and never boring.
