5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 8 Dec 2004
By J. E. Davidson (UK) - See all my reviews

My son (3) and I really enjoy all the books written by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, but this one is our favourite (well actually joint favourite with the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom).

As usual there is a fantastic rhythm to the story - it is a positive joy to read the book aload.

The illustrations are particularly good (and adult readers will enjoy the jokes included in the background).

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect bedtime story, 24 Nov 2006
By Katy (Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
My two year old son adores this. It's an absolute favourite, along with Bear Hunt, A Squash and a Squeeze and the 'Snore' book! It's a wonderfully rhythmical story and if you don't mind doing silly voices and making up tunes it's perfect for reading at bedtime. As with all the above mentioned books, I often catch him reciting passages to himself..., "My tie is a scarf for a cold giraffe" etc. We have a wonderful children's bookshop near us and they recommended this book. At first I thought he might be too young, but they were absolutely right

5.0 out of 5 stars My 3.5-year-old-daughter A-D-O-R-E-S it!!, 17 Feb 2007
By T. Vilaca "tvilaca" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As mentioned by several reviewers, the story is consistent and very correct, full of education and good behaviour towards others around you - a great addition to any 2-5-year-old-child's development. However in addition, it also happens in stages, each new one full of charming characters, with compelling beautiful scenes. There is so much detail in each scene that every time you re-read, there is a new side-story to tell, which keeps an observing child as my daughter very curious to know what happens next. My daughter enjoys the inventing of the parallel characters, nothing to do with the core-story, like the daddy-cat fishing, then the kitty-cat, with mummy-cat by the tent, grilling a fish on the fire. I wish all books I bought my daughter, brought her as much enjoyment as this one.

My son loves this book, as he does all the others by this author-illustrator team. I wonder, though, if I am the only parent who laments the absence of the subjunctive tense ("I... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for reading to little ones
My daughters and I love reading together. We already had some of the authors other books and liked them and thought we would try this one too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a good as the others
I liked this one, but found the prose a bit cumbersome for reading aloud and was expecting more rhyming given the author's other books.
