4.0 out of 5 stars A book for those you want to think for themselves!, 14 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Some reviewers of this book might have missed the point that the essential difference between this book and those by individuals such as Handy, is that this book seeks to outline some critique and theory surrounding organisation studies rather than providing essentially meaningless prescriptions for 'how to manage'. Handy and the like are focused on prescriptve messages as if managing and working in organisations were somehow easy to do - models, matrices, graphs and diagrams will see you through! Hah!

Fortunately, this book provides nothing of the kind. It is not a wholly groundbreaking book that will change your life, but it might just help you to think about organisations, people and the ways in which they have interrelated over the past years (and how we might think about in the future) in a more critical and hence, better way.

Do not buy Handy et al if you have a brain. If you want to think for yourself and you already do - buy this book and let it inspire you to go further.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Critical Analysis, 28 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This book provides an excellent critique of many themes and theories commonly found in Human Resource Management and Work Psychology. The authors assume a basic knowledge of the subject matter, which would make the book difficult for beginners. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to take the subject beyond the basic descriptions that many textbooks contain.

1.0 out of 5 stars work organizations the worst book ever published, 19 May 2003
By A Customer
I have purchased this book under duress, as it was part of the recommended reading for my university course. Unfortunately, the authors perceive an intellect which they do not possess.

The publishers and editors should have explained to the authors that the main criteria for reading a book, is readability and interest. This book is tedious and unreadable, I would strongly recommend that any students purchase Charles B Handy in subsitition for this tedious dirge.
